WELCOME!
I’m glad you’re taking the time to watch this webinar on how you can become a critical force in your adolescent or young adult’s eating disorder treatment.
When it comes to eating disorder treatment, I have heard parents express many ways they feel stuck. Here are some of them:
- You may have a lot of self-blame. You feel that you should have noticed the symptoms of an eating disorder earlier or could have done something to prevent it, such as working less.
- You feel like everything you say and do is triggering to your child, and you feel like you are walking on eggshells around them.
- You feel your child isn’t themself, and it seems as if their personality has drastically changed. You don’t even recognize their new behavior and attitude at times.
- You want your child to have the best eating disorder treatment, but are also stressed about the financial and time commitment involved. You don’t know where to begin with treatment or what direction to continue going in if your child is already in treatment.
- You’re emotionally exhausted, feel helpless, and you are overwhelmed, not to mention frustrated.
Whether these all apply to you or not, one thing is for sure, you can’t bear to continue to see your child suffer, no matter their age.
You don’t have to do this alone. I have worked with parents who are struggling with exactly what you are struggling with.
I’m Dr. Melissa Geraghty, Clinical Health Psychologist, CEO of Phoenix Rising with Dr. G, and creator of The Ultimate Eating Disorders Bootcamp for Parents.
Having worked in eating disorder outpatient, inpatient, PHP, IOP, and residential settings as a psychologist for over a decade, as well as being a past Board Member at an eating disorder nonprofit, I understand firsthand the struggles that parents encounter as they become engulfed in the world of eating disorders.
Many parents feel it is the job of the therapist to “fix their child” and that they do not need to know information about eating disorders. What I have found is that the parents who take the initiative to become knowledgeable about eating disorders become an asset to treatment instead of a block. It’s these adolescents and young adults who end up doing far better in treatment. These adolescents and young adults may also end up spending less time in treatment as a result of this parental support, which of course means less time taken away from living valued lives, and less money that you spend on treatment.
The inherent nature of eating disorders is that they try to rip family members apart. My program allows parents to understand all the confusing eating disorders lingo so that you can become a united alliance with your child against the eating disorder. I want your adolescent or young adult to feel like you are on their side, because we both know you are otherwise you wouldn’t be watching this video!
The Ultimate Eating Disorders Bootcamp for Parents Program is built to empower parents. It’s designed as a one stop overview to learn about eating disorders so you can better support your child.
Here are some messages from a few of my past patients on why parental education is so crucial when it comes to eating disorder treatment:
- “There's so much for parents to take in when their child has an eating disorder. I think it's important for parents to understand that their child has to grow into treatment and recovery. For eating disorder patients, it's a shameful topic that we learn how to embrace over time. My moods and habits at the beginning of recovery were way different from how they were at the end of recovery. As I worked with Dr. Geraghty, we worked on how to incorporate my parents and tell them how they can help until we worked up to having open conversations. I can't imagine having a child with an eating disorder because it must be so confusing and an automatic reflex is to blame yourself, but parent's need to be the silent support system until their child is ready to let them in. Dr. Geraghty helps parents with this.”
- “Eating disorder treatment is a very difficult process. Recovery is very uncomfortable, awkward, and embarrassing. There are a lot of ups and downs, and recovering from an eating disorder is a very emotional time. Parents need to understand that treatment is mentally and emotionally exhausting, so if I would snap randomly, it was because I felt like I hadn't slept in months because the eating disorder was a constant every day, every hour, and every minute battle.”
- “Eating disorder treatment is one of the most difficult journeys you and your child will face. It is important to understand how emotionally challenging the road to recovery is. Parents 100% need support and guidance too.”
- “My parents believed in me. They believed that I was going to get better, and despite the fact that I hated myself completely and thought I was a terrible person at the start of treatment, I was still their little girl. They openly received education about eating disorders so they could understand how to better support me. They were available and supportive and never gave up on me.”
- “Eating disorder treatment is a long process, and parents need to realize that. Education is very important as is the chemistry with the healthcare providers. It’s important to have frequent touch points and better understand what to expect along the way and how to best be supportive.”
- “My parents being open to education about eating disorders was paramount to my treatment and recovery.”
All of these patient points are covered in my program, plus so much more.
